Good times. I miss my friends.

Tonight I played for a Veterans Day concert and the set included this piece. Dr. Viet Cuong wrote this piece and it was dedicated to John Arthur and Jim Obergefell. This name has been in the news today because the Supreme Court has decided not to move towards overturning Obergefell v. Hodges. Jim and John went through so many obstacles to get married and it led to so many others in this country (myself included) to get married and be recognized by our government and receive all of the benefits that go along with being legally married as a same sex couple. I still remember being in the Army stationed in Japan and hearing the news and scrambling to figure out where and how to get married, and fearing that it could be taken away… Here we are over a decade later. The piece itself is so beautiful and such a cool play on Pachelbel’s Cannon in D. Dr. Cuong explained the piece so honestly in a rehearsal several weeks ago and reflected on it as it related to his upbringing as a musician and as a new husband. This piece has become something so dear to me and I have the absolute honor to perform it at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago this December in the presence of Jim Obergefell himself (I will absolutely cry). Art is powerful and political. Getting to play with the @iprideorchestra this summer in DC showed me just how political music is. Small victories like upholding this landmark case show that even though we have progressed, people still act to deny people their happiness and right to simply exist. Being able to perform art like this while history about the art is BEING MADE is a privilege that I do not take lightly. Thank you John and Jim, thank you @vietcuongmusic and thank you @makingmusicmatterfoundation Simply existing and living openly is an act of resistance; you don’t have to play music about it. It’s more fun though.
